From Bellahøj to Vestamager
In 1964, Copenhagen Trade Fair marked the start for Bella Center at Bellahøj. Ten years were to pass before the activities moved to Vestamager, where there was much greater scope for expansion hand in hand with developments and the ever-growing requirements. On 5 September 1975, HM The Queen opened the new Bella Center Copenhagen, thus laying the foundations for a new international exhibition and congress centre.
Since the move to Amager and several additions and extensions, Bella Center Copenhagen has made a name for itself as an international destination – for trade shows and exhibitions, but also for larger, international congresses and events. For example, Bella Center Copenhagen has served as a venue for EU, NATO and UN summits and for the IOC Olympic Congress.
Subsequently, Scandinavian Trade Mart – a professional showcase for the fashion, shoe, leather goods and furniture industries – moved to the Scandinavian market, and into Bella Center Copenhagen. Today, CIFF Fashion House and CIFF Shoes are based in the permanent showrooms with more than 500 leading Scandinavian and international fashion brands.
Moreover, since 1997 Forum Copenhagen has been part of the Bella Center Group, and every year the 500-square-metre multi-purpose arena serves as a venue for countless concerts, exhibitions and major events.
The first hotel
On 16 May 2011, Bella Center Copenhagen opened its doors to its biggest commercial venture ever – the designer hotel Bella Sky Comwell, which has since become a landmark on the island of Amager. The hotel, which was designed by the renowned architectural firm 3XN, comprises two impressive 76.5-metre towers and offers direct access to Bella Center Copenhagen. With 23 floors and 812 designer bedrooms, Bella Sky is one of the biggest hotels in Scandinavia, and offers a spa, fitness centre restaurants and bars.
In 2012, both Bella Center Copenhagen and Bella Sky were acquired by Solstra Capital Partners with a view to expanding conference capacity and building new offices and housing.
2014 – an eventful year
2014 saw several separate organisations being merged to form a united group under the name BC Hospitality Group, with many new challenges, initiatives and measures which have since formed the basis for the group’s ambition of becoming Denmark’s leading hospitality business. In early 2014, BC Hospitality Group merged with one of the world’s most sustainable hotels, Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers, bringing Bella Center, Crowne Plaza and Bella Sky under the same management. In the autumn, Crowne Plaza launched a new catering business, Crown Plaza 360° Venue Catering, a unique all-in concept within outside venue catering.
In November, BC Hospitality Group opened the doors to Comwell Conference Center Copenhagen which, after a DKK 22 million extension, upgrade and refurbishment of the conference and congress facilities in the former Copenhagen Congress Center, has become Denmark’s largest conference centre.
Just before the end of 2014, yet another hotel was added to BC Hospitality Group’s portfolio, the five-star Marriott Copenhagen, one of Copenhagen’s best-known hotels with 406 rooms, one restaurant, a bar and conference facilities capable of accommodating up to 600 guests. In connection with the acquisition of the Marriott Hotel, Bella Sky was rebranded AC Hotel Bella Sky Copenhagen – thereby becoming part of the Marriott family.
At the same time, the rebranding meant that AC Hotel Bella Sky Copenhagen is now the largest Mariott hotel in Europe and the biggest AC by Marriott hotel worldwide, further supporting our ambition of attracting even more guests to the Danish capital.
